Squidoo Spammers Beware
June 17, 2009 |
Squidoo has come out when some new policy changes in an effort to crack down on using Squidoo lenses for spamming purposes.

Once again we have a prime example of how short term thinking marketers abuse valuable and free legitimate online business promotion resources, and make it harder for those of us that choose to abide by the terms of service for the sites. As Squidoo said in their news release, if you are currently making quality lenses these changes won’t affect you at all. In the release they included a list of what are termed “junk topics” for lenses that they will shut down.
It’s easy to see just by taking a quick look at these topics exactly who the abusers are. Once again it is the quick grab the money and run type marketers that give legitimate online business people a bad name. In my observations the search engine algorithms are striving to place more emphasis on content quality and user experience as ranking factors.
This makes total sense if you are trying to provide your users with the best search results and at the same time limit the options for individuals to “game” the system.

Are backlinks still important?
Yeah, you bet they are, but again not just any link. Google is aware that linking is another way that is used to “game the system” so the relativity of the site linking to yours has become increasingly important.
Pretend you are a search engine for a moment. You find a link on several web 2.0 sites pointing back to site “A” as you continue to craw to web you find 100 more links from web 2.0 sites pointing back to site “A”
As you check the age of all those links pointing to site “A” you realize that they all originated on the same two or three days. Wow, that’s funny all these people discovered site “A” at just about the same time and thought it was so great that they linked to it using basically the same content. Amazing coincidence or another case of Harmonic Link Convergence?
Now I’ll ask you the question, is there any long term value in this marketing strategy?
The second point to comes to mind is the value of much of the automation software that is being marketed as the easy option to first page rankings. The problem is not so much the tools themselves, but in the temptation that many of their users succumb to when presented with the ability to do carpet bomb marketing so to speak.
I fully believe in the value that automation software represents to SEO’s an online business people, but what separates Internet professionals from reckless marketers is discretion. As with many tools automation software provides each user with a degree of power. And as with any form of power it can be used to create, enhanced or destroy.
A few want to make long-term income on the Internet it takes what you could call and Internet green mentality. Just like in the off-line world where everybody is talking about green this and green that, which basically means conserving and finding better uses for the resources that we already have, the same type of thinking needs to be applied to the resources that are provided online.
You don’t need 500 Squidoo lenses, 4000 homepages and 2200 social bookmarks all promoting the same junk site or CPA offer.
What do you need?
You simply need to provide useful information that will help someone besides you.
